Release update on Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 2020.2 part 2

Last weeks blog post was dealing with some of the news for the new Version of Simcenter STAR-CCM+, version 2020.2. This theme will be repeated this week. This week’s post will cover AMR updates together with some other relevant updates.


In this year’s first Simcenter STAR-CCM+ release, overset AMR was introduced. This has been further improved for small gap handling. Before a user-defined refinement criterion was necessary. Now a new “Uniform Gap Refinement” ensures refinement with no negative volume cells, no hanging nodes in the prism layer mesher.













An additional AMR feature is the introduction of model based AMR for reacting flows. This helps in reducing the turnaround time while increasing resolution for a flame front. In the video below we see a Volvo combustor case, where the use of physics based AMR model for reacting flows is demonstrated.

Furthermore, multicomponent gas is now compatible with AMR, both reacting and non-reacting. Also introduced is Langrangian multiphase compatibility with AMR. This can reduce the calculation cost in cases where LMP droplets coexist with, either a model based refinement for VOF or, user refinement based on field functions. The video below shows a Vehicle wiper example using VOF and overset model-based AMR refinement alongside LMP.

Data mappers

Volume data mappers has been reworked and are now both faster and require a lot less memory during execution. This in very useful in cases where data mapping is used where solution is mapped often due to remeshing, e.g. In-cylinder combustion simulations, remeshing due to FSI etc. Th graph below shows 6 times reduction in memory on higher core counts for mapping of a race car from 20 M to 15 M cells.

Fluid Dynamics

There is an improvement in physical thermal profile accuracy performing energy averaging for a rotor with stationary shroud. The boundary option (it is an option as it is not appropriate for all circumstances to average the wall temperature) provides averaged results in the shroud, as shown in the image, by allowing the shroud wall to be defined in a separate reference frame. The workflow is easy and uses radial bins like in the case of the mixing plane. But in this case it is fully automated. For processing you can use the same Field Functions as before. Currently it is incompatible with EMP and non-equilibrium PPM.










And finally, for those of you that are running radiation in your simulations. There is now up to 5 times increase in speed in calculating view factors. For this you need to use advanced ray tracing and the improvement is mainly visible for large cases.
